Father’s Day Tribute To My Dad

Yesterday was Father’s day and as such, I wanted to toast my father, Robert. Don’t tell him that I told you, but this year he is turning 75. Shhh! Would you believe that he has been working for the family business since he was 16 years old? That’s almost 60 years of the 91 years we have been in business. WOW!

One important thing to mention is that my dad overcame the odds by helping to get our business to reach our fourth generation of Fortunoff’s. I am not sure if you know this, but it is well documented that the third generation is where a lot of family businesses fail.

Over my lifetime, he has taught me so much. I can’t even begin to count the ways. But also, as far as I can remember, he was always around and stepping up to participate and get involved too. He would always come and watch my lacrosse and soccer games. He was the best baseball coach around and would often take the team out for pizza and Carvel after games whether we won or lost.

Growing up my dad would often teach me manners and etiquette. He taught me how to treat others with kindness and compassion. In hindsight, this was all in preparation for the day that I too would be a dad and I would need to pass these insights and good Fortunoff habits on to my kids.

This is a photo of a photo of myself, dad and brother, Greg, that we were going to put in our booth at quilt market to celebrate our 90th Anniversary. We never got to use it!

I am not sure if I ever told you this or not, but when I was graduating from the University of Michigan in 1995, I really wanted to go into the family business. At that time, the company was facing challenges with lots of business moving overseas to China. Instead of going into the business, I went to law school and then in to stock trading.

About 8 years into my stock trading career, there were many challenges that I faced. The biggest one was that I hit a trading rut that was creating various stress issues (TMJ, acid reflux, hives, heart palpitations and sleepless nights). My dad knew that I was suffering badly. He threw me a life preserver by suggesting that I join the business. I did just that and haven’t turned back since.

In hindsight, he saved me from some rough times and for that, I am very lucky and grateful. I sure hope one day that my kids could say the same if they happen to need saving.

Myself, dad and Greg at our quilt market booth 6 years ago celebrating our 85th year in business.

Since my first day of joining the business around 14/15 years ago, there have been endless lessons from my dad who I consider an expert in textiles. He has seen a lot, he knows a lot and he has been gracious enough to share that info with me and my brother. As my dad is still active in the business, I look forward to being able to continue to tap into his wealth of textile and business acumen and also work with him for many more years. I will be happy to carry on his legacy and make him proud for many years to come.

With that, happy father’s day to you dad and all the other amazing role model dads out there!
