Let’s Talk 108″ From The Blank Quilting Corp.

Today I will continue on my mission to expose you all to more 108″ wide quilt backings from my companies. This week we will review the 8 different wide backs from The Blank Quilting (BQC) and in the coming weeks I will finish up with Henry Glass Fabrics and FreeSpirit Fabrics. Let’s jump right into it.

DIGITAL 108″

Currently, BQC has only two active 108″ digital lines. This line is called Plume 108″. As mentioned on several occasions, the reason to print a line digitally is due to the fact that the design has lots of colors and shades of color that exceed the amount that is viable to print on a rotary or flat bed printer. With respect to 108″ designs produced in Pakistan (where we print the majority of our 108″), we are only allowed to use about 11 colors in a print as opposed to 18 colors on a 44″ print from South Korea. Once we are over the 11 colors and can’t reduce the color count any further, we are forced to print digitally when it comes to 108″. In their lies Plume 108″ digital. This line comes in 5 colorways and is recognized as pattern 9197. This one is pretty striking if you ask me. I liked it so much that I included two of the color ways above and below.

Baroque is the other 108″ digital line. Ironically with this line, we submitted it to our supplier to be regularly printed, but after working on engraving the design, the mill told us that this would be best if printed digitally irregardless of there not being many colors involved. Of course we prefer non-digital because it costs less and the selling price is lower to our customers, but we really need to listen to the experts at the mill. Of all the 108″ lines that I am discussing here today, this one is the only one that isn’t available at once. This line ships in June. It comes in 8 different colors and the pattern is 9777. As the name Baroque implies, this line is very ornate and extravagant.

LICENSED

Of the six remaining 108″ lines that I am reviewing here, one is licensed and the rest are house lines. The one licensed line is from one of The Blank Quilting Corp’s most prolific licensors namely, Tana Mueller of Western Denim & Dirt. Her 108″ line first started as a 44/45″ basic and over time gained such notoriety that we decided to try it in 108″ based on popular demand. This is similar to the situation that occurred with the Peppered Cottons by Pepper Cory for Studioe that I discussed in last week’s blog. In any case, the line by Tana is called Urban Legend. It comes in 7 lovely colors and is a very simple tone on tone blender design. It is known as pattern 9195 and is available for at once delivery.

UNLICENSED

Chloe 108″ is such a simple design, yet it has been super popular. In fact, it was a knock off of a previous 108″ that Blank Quilting had produced in the past that people kept asking for over and over. The thing is that some people like more subdued prints for the backs of their quilts in order to make what is on the front shine. Chloe comes in 6 different colors and is recognized as pattern 9196. Below is the grey colorway. See what I mean about it being a simple design?

9196/95 CHLOE 108″

Infinity 108″ is another pretty simple design comprised of meandering swirls. It’s a 2 color print in that it has white and another color. This one comes in 8 different colors and is identified as pattern 9485. Below is the red version. This one comes in pigment white on white too which is always a very strong seller for us.

You want a wilder 108″ wide quilt back? Look no further than the Prismatic 108″ collection. This is that 108″ that you “Wow” at after you get to see what’s on the front of the quilt. In fact, this backing may give the front of the quilt a run for its money. It’s colorful. It has great movement. And it’s just plain old vibrant and happy. Prismatic 108″ comes in 6 different colors with some being way over the top (this one below) and others being calmer and less multi. You can find Prismatic 108″ by looking for pattern 9074. I just love this wild one below! As my dad first told me when I started in the business, everything looks good on black and this case is no different. It’s pretty sweet, huh?

9074/93 PRISMATIC 108″

Quarry 108″ is very cleverly named as the design is meant to resemble stones in a quarry. This is another one of our more tonal designs with only a couple colors and they are mostly all just shades of one color like the red version below. This design comes in 7 different colors and is known as pattern 9340.

Sedona 108″ is the last group that I am going to review here today. This one is the neatest to me. The waves create such nice movement and depth. This baby comes in 7 different colors and can be identified as pattern 9537.

That’s all she wrote for the 108″ quilt backs from The Blank Quilting Corp. I thought it would be important for you to know that on the house 108″ lines that we often buy a design from one of the many studios that visit us in New York. If the design costs us around $500 and we can make the design in 6-8 colors, we will easily cover the cost of the design and in fact it will end up being a minimal cost on a per yard basis. Just saying. In any case, those are the most current 108″ wide quilt backs from The Blank Quilting Corp. If you are using 108″ wide fabrics for backing in the future, please consider those from BQC on the next go round. Thank you!

Hi Scott – I love being able to use 108″ backs when I quilt. The variety available from Jaftex is amazing. I love that Baroque line, and I hope you keep it forever, because…wait for it…if it ain’t Baroque, don’t fix it :o) Sorry, it’s 5:30 in the morning – Seriously though, the fabric line is gorgeous. Thanks again for the rundown. Can’t wait for Free Spirit!

    Scott,
Thank you for the previews and sneak peaks, the tours and the blogs.
I really enjoy seeing your new lines ahead of the crowd.
I am very partial to the Baroque design you talked about tonight. It is so subtle. I wonder, itโ€™s got me thinking about what I could create for a top that would do that backing justice. Uh oh.
And I fell in love with Sedona the first time I saw a picture of it a few weeks back. It would be great with so many different tops.
Thank you for promoting so many great artists and designers.

      Hi Cathe,
You are welcome for it all. It is my pleasure to serve you. Yes, I too like that baroque line. I am sure you will figure out something awesome to make with it. I have faith.
Sedona Wave is another good one. These lines are usually around for awhile as the minimums are large, but you should be able to use those 2 for your next 2 quilts. good luck.
      Send picks.

Love all these printed backings! To me, the busier the backing the better I love it, so of course, that black one with the colors on it – wow!!

    Thanks for showing us!

    • Scott Fortunoff

      Hi Becky,
Thanks for the nice comment. Good to know that you are into the wild and crazy backings. I guess to each his own and that is what makes the world go round. Thanks for your support.

These are absolutely gorgeous online. I hope the detail is as intricate in person. I only have experience using 108″ for one quilt, as I’m a new quilter. Thanks for explaining the reasoning behind digital printing.

    • Scott Fortunoff

      Hi Kelly,
I am glad you like them. The details are always better in person that on the computer or the color card. That is a safe bet. Hopefully you will consider using more 108″ going forward….and from my companies. Thanks for your support.
      Have a great week.

      Hi Betty,
Well isn’t that awesome. Now you just need to make 8 quilts so you can use some of each. HA! ๐Ÿ™‚
Thanks for the kind comments. Have a great week.
