My Week In Review

Last Sunday, my dad and I met up with Kaffe Fassett, Brandon Mably and the Colchester Mill Fabrics and Quilting team for lunch in Connecticut.  It was great to see Kaffe and Brandon as I hadn’t seen them since the last October quilt market. I was surprised when they gifted me a gorgeous paperweight from Burano that you can see below. (As an aside, when I met them for the first time, I gave them a Paul Stankard paperweight from my own collection.) The present meant a lot to me especially because they are in the US for over a month and they only packed in carry-ons. So kind!

Around 6 pm that evening, my dad, Brandon, Kaffe and I headed over to the lecture hall where they would be performing their color lecture. When we arrived, we were greeted by tons of fabric-holics…. 350-400 in attendance. Most were mulling around the pop up shop filled with all things Kaffe. Cheryl, the host of the event, and owner of Colchester Mill Fabrics & Quilting (CMFQ), did a great job sprucing the place up with lots of eye catching quilts. It was a nice touch and created a fabulous fabric atmosphere.

The stage and audience just prior to the event.

If you ever get a chance to see Kaffe & Brandon present a color lecture, you should jump on that once in a lifetime opportunity.  Brandon starts off with his schtick and it really gets the crowd pumping.  Then Kaffe comes in to close the deal where he speaks so eloquently about color, inspiration, fabric and quilting. When they are done, they pose for pictures and sign books. In all, it runs for about 2 hours and it will certainly be a memorable time.

My dad and brother are more of the behind the scenes guys in the office and don’t get out as much as I do. However, I was blessed to have my dad join me on this journey.  I know that the experience was eye opening for him. Since we view the world differently, I know he will have a lot of great takeaways and ideas as a result of this trip.  It was great to see him mingling around and picking everyone’s brain and I mean everyone.  Several people stopped him and told him he looked like me.  His reply was, “No, he looks like me.”

The next day, my dad and I observed the Ice Cream Quilt class taught by Kaffe & Brandon at CMFQ. This was the second year in a row that I got to be a fly on the wall in the class. There were 30 guests who were fortunate to partake in the class. It was great to see how their quilt designs developed over the course of the day based on the critiques from both Kaffe & Brandon. It was nice for my dad and I to be able to mingle with the attendees. One of my favorite quotes of the day by K&B was, “We are not teachers, we are encouragers.” And they sure did a lot of encouraging.

Here are a few of the ladies getting ready to rock. I love how they all bring so much fabric with them.

On Thursday evening, I did a split screen Facebook live interview for the first time with Charlotte Gould of Stitches by Charlotte. She is 11 years old and one of our newest designers for Studioe. She is such an inspiration. We just introduced her newest collection called Sew Kind and are very excited about its prospects and especially what it stands for. Click on the link to learn more about her latest line or watch this video.

On Friday evening, I did another Facebook live. This time I was having a virtual launch party from my office for my second blog book. This is a compilation of several of my older blogs from this website. If you don’t know about the book, you can watch the launch party by clicking here. The most important thing that I want you to know about the book is that all the proceeds from it are going to be used to buy more sewing machines for my sewing machine giveaway. I am very proud about that and sure hope you can support this great cause to help keep our industry thriving by getting more machines in circulation.

And there you have it folks, that was my week. How was yours?

Silly me … I have a stash of Kaffe fabric I just won’t cut simply because I love it so much! It’s wonderful [and warms my heart] to see the many things you share with the sewing world. I also must say that I loved the video’s of the fabric printing process overseas [I mentioned that would be a cool thing to share in Lancaster but you hinted it might not be possible … but you made it happen!]. Not only do you hold the key to one of the best fabric stashes in the world you are also a teacher and an inspiration to others in so many ways. Happy fall and all the best, Katie

You didn’t say it this time. But I could feel the undertones. You were “strutt’n your stash” again. And I am jealous. LOVE that fabric!

Thanks for all you do. I will be giving a talk about my experiences in the Kaffe/Brandon color workshop at the monthly quilt club at Mended Hearts quilts near Ellsworth Iowa. I attended at Missouri Star Quilt. Will take your book along and talk about the good it is going to do. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for all the encouragement and help over the last many many months. From the texts at just the right time when I was ready to go over the edge, the explanations of the “other side of the business” when I didn’t understand or didn’t like an answer I was receiving etc etc etc.
Because of the part you and your company played, our Kaffe event was nothing short of fantastic!

      Hi Cheryl,
Hope your retreat is going well or went well. Thanks for the kind note. Glad the event went so well and glad if I helped you in anyway. I had a great time and thank you for allowing dad and I to be flies on the wall. Have a great week.
